Dr. Craig Barrett, Ph.D. - President and Chairman

Dr. Craig R. Barrett was born in San Francisco, California and received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science from Stanford University, serving on the faculty of Stanford after graduation. Dr. Barrett was a Fulbright Fellow at Danish Technical University in Denmark and a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Physical Laboratory in England. In 1974 Dr. Barrett joined Intel Corporation. He was elected to Intel Corporation's Board of Directors in 1992, became Intel's fourth president in 1997, chief executive officer in 1998, and chairman of the board in 2005, a post held until he retired in May 2009.

Dr. Barrett is a leading advocate for improving education in the U.S. and the world, and is a vocal spokesman for the value technology can provide in raising social and economic standards globally. He chairs BASIS Schools, Change The Equation, STAND for Children Arizona, Dossia, Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors and the National Forest Foundation; co-chairs the Skolkovo Foundation Council and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Advisory Board; vice chairs Science Foundation Arizona; serves on the Boards of Achieve, K12, Society for Science and the Public, Carnegie Institution for Science, the Arizona Commerce Authority, Tallwave, Impele and Geothermic Solution. Dr. Barrett served as Chairman of the National Academy of Engineering and the United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development. He co-chaired the Business Coalition for Student Achievement and the National Innovation Initiative Leadership Council, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the U.S. Council for International Business and the Clinton Global Initiative Education Advisory Board. Dr. Barrett serves on numerous other boards, policy and government panels and committees.

Shelly M. Esque

Ms. Esque recently retired after 20 years at Intel as a global executive recognized for leadership of dynamic teams, results orientation, forging long‐lasting partnerships, and making a positive impact in the world by harnessing the power of a Fortune 50 company. Her experience leading in corporate, government and nonprofit environments and her results ranging from building new business and philanthropic global partnerships, to catalyzing awareness and action around social issues made her a perfect fit for a top Charter schools’ leadership board.

Ms. Esque was the corporate spokesperson and effective ambassador, internationally known expert in public private partnerships, STEM education and corporate social responsibility. She has a deep commitment to integrity, ethical behavior, leadership development and mentorship.

Ms. Esque led Intel Corporation’s involvement in the movement to raise awareness around the importance of educating girls for global economic and social progress. Intel was the driving force behind the creation of Girls Rising a feature film and social action campaign shown around the world to millions of people. The campaign included collaboration with government leaders, non‐profit partners, employees and customers earned Intel high‐profile roles in 20 leading policy forums.

Christopher "Chip" Haass - Treasurer

Chip Haass grew up in San Antonio and attended school at St. Mary’s Hall where he learned the value of character, professionalism, and service to the community. Mr. Haass went on to attend Texas Christian University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in public policy and history and a Master’s of Education degree. He has demonstrated the unique ability to form strategic partnerships to address important issues and a history of public service within the community. Mr. Haas has a strong commitment to the San Antonio community and the South Texas region.

Mr. Haass recently joined Sextant Strategy as a senior partner with responsibility over government and community affairs. He provides strategic counsel and creative solutions to clients, navigating government and community affairs and business development activities. At Sextant, he brings his expertise in effective leadership, strategic planning and advocacy in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining Sextant Strategy, Mr. Haass served as a Market and Development Manager for Chesapeake Energy. At Chesapeake, he played an integral role in the government, public affairs and corporate development of the second largest producer of natural gas in the country.

His strong commitment to the community led his election to the San Antonio City Council, District 10 from 2003 to 2007. His talent for development of professional networks can best be credited to his experience serving San Antonio in various capacities, including his membership with the City of San Antonio Urban Affairs Committee, as a board member of the Habitat for Humanity Board of Trustees, the Greater Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council, the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Committee, and the City of San Antonio’s Municipal Court Advisory Committee.

Mr. Haass remains engaged in San Antonio through his involvement in community activities. Volunteer experience includes the Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center as a mediator, and with St. Helena’s Catholic Church Knights of Columbus. He also is an active member of the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Energy and Sustainability Committee. Mr. Haass continues to be a force of influence in San Antonio, highlighting the city as an epicenter of opportunity and cutting-edge industries.

Dr. Michael Soto - Secretary

Dr. Michael Soto has long been active in seeking to improve the education landscape in San Antonio and Texas. He is an English professor at Trinity University, where he also directs the McNair Scholars Program.

A native of South Texas, Soto received a B.A. degree from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. degree at Harvard University. He is the author of several books and academic articles on twentieth-century U.S. literature and cultural history.

A BASIS San Antonio dad, Soto also serves on the SA2020 Commission on Education, the San Antonio Education Partnership board of directors, and he is president of the Gemini Ink board of directors. He represented fourteen South Texas counties as a member of the State Board of Education.

Nora Walsh

Nora Walsh is the Executive Director of the George W. Brackenridge Foundation, a private foundation committed to bringing high-performing charter schools to San Antonio and supporting their continued growth. Nora has been with the Brackenridge Foundation for four years and is inspired by the positive impact the Foundation has on the San Antonio educational landscape. A staunch supporter of school choice, Nora believes a student’s educational options should not be dictated by his or her zip code.

Prior to joining Brackenridge, Nora’s professional life in education spanned pre-school through college including past positions in Major Giving at Trinity University and as the Enrollment & Marketing Director at Providence Catholic School. Nora understands the true value of education and the professional barriers that arise in the absence of a college degree. She has prioritized education in her family, pursuing her own degree and supporting her husband and three daughters through years of higher education (four undergraduate and two graduate degrees with another master’s and a doctorate in progress).

Nora is amazed at the world-class tuition-free public school education that BASIS provides students in grades K-12 and is honored and humbled to serve as a Board Member. She resides in San Antonio with her husband, a long time team member of USAA.
